Prior to surgery

Relax and take a deep breath. Regardless, if you are excited or nervous about your complimentary consultation with Breast Expert, Dr. Matthew G. Stanwix MD FACS of Richmond Plastic Surgeons (Richmond Virginia, Charlottesville VA, Virginia Beach, Washington DC), you will feel at ease with his calming demeanor and vast expertise in the area. From his training at the #1 Hospital in the US (The Johns Hopkins Hospital) to his Ivy League education and exceptional results, you have undoubtedly chosen the right surgeon. Here are some things that will be decided prior to surgery:

  • Choosing a size: Despite some Hollywood stereotypes, the majority of women increase from one to two cup sizes to obtain that flattering figure they always wanted. You likely do not want to hear this, but, forget about cup size. Every manufacturer has its own size cups and a “C” cup in one may be a “B” or “D” cup in another. What you really want to do is try out our collection of silicone implant sizers when you come for your office consultation. This is always the best part of the visit because you really get to visualize what the end result will look like. Look at your body and breast silhouette in the mirror and see how the different sizes fit your body best. Also, you may find that you would enjoy bringing a friend or spouse as well as various outfits with you when you try on sizers. It is a fun and relaxing process!
  • The Type of Implant: Saline or Silicone. It used to be the age old question. However, over 90% of women in Dr. Stanwix practice choose silicone implants for their breast augmentation. Remember, both types of implants are very safe. You must look at the benefits and negatives of each. Saline implants are slightly cheaper, can be placed through a smaller incision (by about ½ inch), and you know right when it ruptures because it deflates. On the other hand, saline implants do not look or feel as natural as silicone. If you are looking for a more natural look, then silicone implants are likely best for you. Dr. Stanwix will also discuss the breast implant profile best fit for you and whether or not textured and shaped (gummy bear) silicone implants are right for you. Dr. Stanwix is the only surgeon in Richmond VA using Sientra’s sought after and top of the line form shaped implants.
  • The Incision: Dr. Stanwix uses primarily two types of incisions to enhance breasts- inframammary fold (underneath the breast fold) or periareolar (around the areola). Dr. Stanwix never uses the axilla/armpit (transaxillary) or belly button (TUBA) approaches because of the unsightly scarring and problems associated with them. The incision choice depends on the size of the areola, patient preference, and type of implant. One rule of thumb is that textured and shaped (gummy bear) implants are always placed through the inframammary fold incision. Be assured that regardless of the incision, Dr. Stanwix meticulous closure will leave you with a hidden scar. See his before and after gallery of these exceptional results.
  • Placement of Implant: There are three places that a breast implant can be placed- under the muscle, over the muscle, dual plane, and under the muscle fascia (subfascial). The overwhelming choice for Dr. Stanwix tends to be the dual plane because of its natural look and advanced techniques he can do with it. However, for those that choose silicone implants and have a good amount of breast tissue to start with, under the fascia or above the muscle may work well too. Dr. Stanwix will discuss with you which is best during your consultation.
  • Preparing for Surgery: Mental and physical readiness for surgery can make the recovery process more smooth and enjoyable. Physically, its important to eat healthy and be active leading up until the surgery date. A list of medicines, herbals, and supplements will be provided to you that have to be stopped 1-2 weeks prior to surgery. Mentally, Dr. Stanwix calls the period right before surgery a time for “nervous excitement.” Enhancing ones breasts is an exciting time! But, Dr. Stanwix understands that surgery and anesthesia can make women nervous because of unknowns and vulnerability. As a gifted artist in breast surgery, Dr. Stanwix will take great care of you and reassure you in your choice in surgery and surgeon.

The Surgery

Your breast augmentation with implants will be performed in The Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery by Board Certified Plastic Surgeon & Breast Expert Dr. Matthew G. Stanwix, MD, FACS. The surgery takes approximately one hour under general anesthesia and you go home the same day. Following surgery you will have strips of tape over your incisions, some gauze pads, and a surgical bra. Although Dr. Stanwix uses numbing medicine and innovative techniques, you will have some discomfort which is easily controlled by a mild pain medicine. Because you had general anesthesia, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you overnight. Don’t forget about your complimentary recovery kit that will enhance your healing and get you back quick! Lastly, you will be given a prescription for a pain medicine and an antibiotic to take following surgery.

One of Dr. Stanwix’ top missions is a speedy recovery for you. Women are always surprised at how well they feel after surgery and how quick they get back into normal activities. In the days following surgery, it is important to wear the bra, walk around at least ten times a day, and wear your bra/garment. Most normal activities around the house are fine to do, but no lifting over a gallon of milk for about one week. You may resume almost all aerobic activities by about 10-14 days and then weightlifting exercises by 2-3 weeks. Dr. Stanwix will provide you with specific postoperative instructions, but questions may still arise on what to do and not do. That’s why you can always reach Dr. Stanwix 24/7/365 by email at
