Breast Reduction

Lift and Restore Youthfulness!

First of all, congratulations on choosing a breast reduction! Dr. Matthew G. Stanwix is a leading expert in breast reduction surgery and performs cutting edge, advanced, and limited scar incision techniques. If you feel that your breasts are too large, too heavy, cause issues with neck and back pain, or just affect your quality of life, then breast reduction surgery is for you! A breast reduction not only decreases the size of your breasts, but also lifts the nipple back up into its youthful position. Below you will find some helpful information on the advanced breast surgery that Dr. Stanwix performs and has perfected. Also, don’t forget to look at his Frequently Asked Questions to learn more about questions you may still have.

Prior to surgery

Relax and take a deep breath. Regardless, if you are excited or nervous about your complimentary consultation with Breast Expert, Dr. Matthew G. Stanwix MD FACS of Richmond Plastic Surgeons (Richmond Virginia, Charlottesville VA, Virginia Beach, Washington DC) you will feel at ease with his calming demeanor and vast expertise in the area. From his training at the #1 Hospital in the US (The Johns Hopkins Hospital) to his Ivy League education and exceptional results, you have undoubtedly chosen the right surgeon. Here are some things that will be decided prior to surgery:

  • Choosing a size: If you pay for your surgery out of pocket, then you can determine which size that you want. Most women choose to have their final breast size fit their body shape well. Others feel that they have had large breast their whole life, do not want to deal with them, and simply want a size smaller than what fits their body shine and shape. Lastly, other women have had large breasts their whole life and still would like to be on the larger size, but just smaller than what they currently are. If insurance is covering your breast reduction, then you likely have no say in what size you can be after surgery (insurance will tell Dr. Stanwix the minimal amount he needs to remove in each breast).
  • The incision choice: Dr. Stanwix performs vertical (lollipop), wise pattern, free nipple, and other advanced techniques for breast reduction. He will discuss with you his expert opinion on your best choice during your consultation.
  • Liposuction: The “wings” or folds/fullness on the side of the breasts (under the armpit) and in the bra strap line will be dealt with through liposuction. By doing so, it will define your breast shape, limit your incision length, and provide for an unparalleled result. However, if insurance is covering your surgery, then liposuction can only be performed if you pay for this part out of pocket.
  • Preparing for Surgery: Mental and physical readiness for surgery can make the recovery process more smooth and enjoyable. Physically, it is important to eat healthy and be active leading up until the surgery date. A list of medicines, herbals, and supplements will be provided to you that have to be stopped 1-2 weeks prior to surgery. Mentally, Dr. Stanwix calls the period right before surgery a time for “nervous excitement.” Enhancing ones breasts is an exciting time! But, Dr. Stanwix understands that surgery and anesthesia can make women nervous because of unknowns and vulnerability. As a gifted artist in breast surgery, Dr. Stanwix will take great care of you and reassure you in your choice in surgery and surgeon.

The Surgery

Your breast reduction surgery will be performed in The Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery or the Hospital of your choice by Board Certified Plastic Surgeon & Breast Expert Dr. Matthew G. Stanwix, MD, FACS. The surgery takes approximately two and a half hours under general anesthesia and you go home the same day. Following surgery you will have skin glue over the incisions and you will be placed in a surgical bra. Although Dr. Stanwix uses numbing medicine and innovative techniques, you will have some discomfort which is easily controlled by a mild pain medicine. Because you had general anesthesia, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you overnight. Don’t forget about your complimentary recovery kit that will enhance your healing and get you back quick!

Recovery & Activity

One of Dr. Stanwix’ top missions is a speedy recovery for you. Women are always surprised at how well they feel after surgery and how quick they get back into normal activities. In the days following surgery, it is important to wear the surgical bra, walk around at least ten times a day, and drink plenty of fluids. Most normal activities around the house are fine to do, but no lifting over a gallon of milk for about one week. You may resume almost all aerobic activities by about 10-14 days and then weightlifting exercises by 2-3 weeks. Dr. Stanwix will provide you with more specific postoperative instructions, but questions may still arise on what to do and not do. That’s why you can always reach Dr. Stanwix 24/7/365 by email at or calling 804.285.4115.
